uring the search for Jack the Ripper, London police received many letters, but this one, known as the "From Hell" letter, is the only one that was sent with human remains....|
The letter reads:
I send you half the Kidne I took from one women prasarved it for you tother piece I fried and ate it was very nise. I may send you the bloody knif that took it out if you only wate a whil longer
Catch me when you can Mishter Lusk
This letter, sometimes known as the "Lusk letter" was sent on October 15, 1888 amid many letters that claimed to be from Jack the Ripper. This letter is regarded as authentic for two reasons - firstly, it is not signed "Jack the Ripper" as most of the crank letters were. Secondly, the letter was sent to George Lusk, the head of the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee along with a small box containing a portion of a human kidney, preserved in ethanol. Ripper victim Catherine Eddowes yielded her kidneys to the Ripper.
The actual letter and the accompanying kidney have been lost, although they were committed to official police keeping.
